Tips for Relieving Stress During the Holidays

It’s an hour before your holiday dinner, cranky Aunt Fran is on her way, and the potatoes still aren’t peeled. You need help!

Try these tips to reduce stress and make the holidays a little more jolly.

Getting ready for the holidays

Shop less.

Standing in line in a crowded store isn’t everyone’s idea of fun. As much as you can, instead of buying presents, buy a gift of time: A coupon for a lunch out together or some movie tickets are always welcome, and they’re easier on your feet.

Keep gifts inexpensive or free.

Many people can’t afford a lot of holiday gifts, and money worries equal stress. Try getting creative with alternatives. Some families draw names and each person buys for one person only. Or try coupons tailored for a particular person: A night off from doing dishes, for instance, or a massage.

Say no, thanks.

Before the decorations go up, ask yourself: What is most important about this holiday? What memories do I want to keep? Advance planning can help cut back on the holiday bustle while still keeping the parts you love best. Be ready to RSVP to holiday invitations with a polite “No, thank you.”

Have fun at holiday events
Keep a schedule for the kids.

When you have children, stick to an eating and sleeping schedule as much as possible. They will be happier and the household will be more peaceful. Offset any holiday scheduling chaos by letting kids know early and giving them a say in the planning. Even the youngest children like to plan a party, and they’ll feel more in control during busy times.

Play games.

Games can keep things fun and light at family gatherings. A walk, a scavenger hunt, cards, or charades can be designed for older or younger players. Games help you stay in the moment and head off difficult personalities. If drama crops up, make plans to discuss issues after the festivities wind down.

Be kind to yourself during the holidays
Stretch, Breathe and Meditate.

Don’t be afraid to remove yourself for 10-20 minute intervals to reflect and relax.

Stay hydrated.

Drinking plenty of fluids before, during, and after big meals and while traveling will help keep you from getting bloated and dehydrated.

Eat everything, just in moderation.

Often times we’re surrounded by many extra sweets and fats during the Holidays that w are rarely exposed to. While it’s fine to splurge from time to time, keeping your diet in moderation over the Holidays will help you feel more in control and ultimately help combat stress.

Stay in the moment.

Take the pressure off by paying attention to where you are now, not what you have to do next. Stress is often related to worrying about the future or fretting about the past. Focus on the moment. And when stressed-out friends and family come calling, don’t take their worries personally. Accept people as they are–with a smile if you can manage it.
