Seriously, Are Your Health and Wellness Goals Realistic?

New Year’s resolutions that set way-too-lofty goals are doomed to fail. If you plan to lose 50 pounds in the first two months of 2015–well, that is a pretty unrealistic goal. If you plan to start exercising three hours a day–that is also unrealistic. Remember the old Aesop fable about the tortoise and the hare? It may be cliche but it’s the best advice you’ll ever hear about achieving your 2015 health goals is–“slow and steady wins the race”. It’s taking small steps and small measures every day that add up over time to make a BIG DIFFERENCE!

Here are some simple and REALISTIC goals that will pay off big time if you do a little every day in 2015.

Resolve to Eat Healthier Snacks
While eating more fruits, vegetables and lean poultry will definitely contribute to a healthier you, snacking on the right kinds of foods are just as important to achieving your goals. Foods that crunch when you eat them are innately satisfying. They stay longer in your mouth, exercise your jaws and make you feel like you’re eating a lot of food. Healthy, low-calorie crunchy snacks include those small boxes of cereal (Cheerios, wheat squares); single packets of trail mix; rice cakes; pretzel sticks (with mustard for added flavor); carrots; baked potato chips; dried apple slices and low-fat croutons.

Low-Calorie Chewy Food
Dried fruit such as raisins or cranberries are healthy, chewy snacks give nervous jaws something extra to do while eating.

FUN FACT: chewing gum is not recommended as a replacement for a chewy snack because it activates your salivary glands. Salivation makes your brain think you are hungry. In response, the brain sends a signal to the stomach telling it that it needs food when it really doesn’t.

Incorporating Exercise into Your Daily Routine Without Visiting a Gym
Stand up or walk when talking on your cell phone
ALWAYS take the stairs over the elevator
If possible, ride your bicycle or walk to work.
Exercise while sitting at your desk.
Play active video games like Dance Revolution or Wii Fit
Dance while doing housework
Park your car at the back of parking lots and jog to the door
Perform isometric exercises while watching television
Stretch your body whenever you can–stretching is exercise!
